This year marks the 90th anniversary of the Communist Party of China (CPC). To help foreign correspondents better understand the glorious history, fine tradition, concept of governance and party-building work of the CPC, the IPC invited a number of foreign correspondents in China to Jiangxi and Shanxi provinces for the "Red Tour" interview activities from June 13 to 18, 2011. Nearly 30 foreign correspondents in China from the media of Britain, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Denmark, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, India and Pakistan attended the event.

Jinggangshan – Cradle of Chinese Revolution

The majestic and impressive Jinggangshan rolling 500 li is the cradle of Chinese revolution and more importantly an immortal monument of the great turnover of modern Chinese revolutionary history.

From June 13 to 15, the correspondents interviewed China Executive Leadership Academy, Jinggangshan (CELAJ), visited Huangyangjie and Longtan scenic spots and Jinggangshan Revolution Museum and watched the grand live performance Jinggangshan.

The CELAJ is located on the beautiful Jinggangshan. Established with the approval of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, it is a national-level training base teaching CPC and government officials, business executives, technical professionals and military officers the history of CPC, party-building theory, revolutionary tradition and basic national conditions. As an institution directly under the CPC Central Committee with funding totally from the national finance, it is administrated by the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee and Jiangxi CPC Provincial Committee is in charge of its daily affairs. The CELAJ covers a total area of 242 mu, including 26,000 square meters of buildings which were completed at the end of 2004 and put into use in 2005 and can altogether hold 400 trainees. Zhou Jintang, Vice President of the CELAJ met with the correspondents. Zhou introduced the Academy's training of Party members and development, mainly elaborated the "Jinggangshan spirit" of building belief, working hard, seeking truth from facts, blazing new path, relying on the people and having the courage to win and answered questions on the innovation of party-building work in the new era, the CPC's development objectives, comparison of Chinese and foreign ruling parties and the" red tourism". The correspondents then observed a training course of the CELAJ and interviewed officials trained there.

The correspondents visited Huangyangjie on June 14. Huangyangjie has a majestic topography. Looking around, visitors see mountains rising and falling. Huangyangjie is like an isolated island in the sea and that's why people also call it "Wangyangjie". The famous Huangyangjie defense battle took place exactly here on August 30, 1928. The red army beat back four enemy regiments with the force of less than a battalion and defended Jinggangshan. To commemorate the battle, Mao Zedong especially wrote down the well-known poem Xijiangyue Jinggangshan: "we see the flags flying at the foot of the mountain and hear the drum beating on the top of the mountain. We stay upright even we're surrounded by countless enemy forces. We have already set up strict barriers and together we will defeat the enemy. The gun fires from Huangyangjie tell us the enemy forces have been beat back." Here the correspondents saw the fortifications and barracks built by the red army and the famous "trail of food transport" once used by Mao Zedong, Zhu De as well as soldiers and civilians of Jinggangshan. Wandering in Huangyangjie, the correspondents seemed to have heard the rumble of guns in the defense battle.

A magnificent modern building on Hongjun Nanlu, Ciping, Jinggangshan attracted the correspondents and it is the famous Jinggangshan Revolution Museum. Stepping in the Museum just like entering in the history of the CPC. Sculptures, real objects, pictures, sound and light art exhibitions… all of these materials comprehensively display the 28-month glorious history of Jinggangshan battle and well interpret the great "Jinggangshan spirit" of building belief, working hard, seeking truth from facts, blazing new path, relying on the people and having the courage to win.

The correspondents then watched the grand live performance Jinggangshan. The 100,000 square meters of water-and-mountain theater, RMB100 million of huge investment, more than 600 performers, the largest exterior light and sound setup in China, the reproduction of the tragic war scenes made people feel like coming back to those days filled with blood and gun fires in Jinggangshan revolutionary base 80 years ago. The large scale and wonderful performance impressed the correspondents deeply. One of them said "it's so impressive. I've never expected to watch such a superb performance in Jinggangshan!"

In Nanchang, they visited the Memorial of the August 1 Nanchang Uprising to learn the arduous course of the CPC of building and leading its army to conduct armed fights, walked the "Xiaoping alley" to experience the feeling of China's "chief architect" for the fate of the Party and the country on the eve of reform and opening up and toured Nanchang Urban Planning Exhibition Hall and LatticePower in Nanchang New and High-tech Zone to feel the vigor of economic growth in the city and the sound investment environment in China. Zhou Guan, member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Nanchang Municipal Committee and Director of the local Propaganda Department held talks with the correspondents and answered their questions on the organizational construction of the Party and Nanchang's future development.

Yan'an –Holy Land of Chinese Revolution

Yan'an is the world-renowned holy land of Chinese revolution. From 1935 to 1948, it is in Yan'an that the CPC Central Committee and Mao Zedong led and directed the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the War of Liberation, laid the cornerstone of the People's Republic of China, wrote an extraordinarily touching chapter of history and developed the immortal "Yan'an spirit" of seeking truth from facts and combining theory with practice, serving the people wholeheartedly, self-reliance and hard work.

From June 16 to 18, the correspondents visited and made interviews in Yan'an Revolution Memorial, Zaoyuan revolutionary site, China Executive Leadership Academy, Yan'an (CELAY) and Yan'an Middle School.

Yan'an Revolution Memorial is a demonstration base of the glorious history of the older generation of proletarian revolutionists represented by comrade Ma Zedong who led China's revolution, a red program of the CPC and all the Chinese people on the patriotic education, education of revolutionary tradition and education of Yan'an spirit and a political program of strengthening the CPC's ideological, organizational and work style building. The large number of valuable relics, pictures, sculptures, sand table models, restored scenes and multi-media demonstrations in the Memorial vividly and comprehensively reproduce the revolutionary sites of the CPC and Chairman Mao in Yan'an. Showing strong interest in the exhibits and the stories behind the exhibits, the correspondents asked in details about the CPC's fight against the Japanese invasion in the rear base and direction of the War of Liberation in Yan'an.

Zaoyuan is located in Zaoyuan Village which is 8 kilometers away from Northwest Yan'an. It used to be a landlord's estate. From 1944 to March 1947, the secretariat of CPC Central Committee moved from Yangjialing to Zaoyuan. The correspondents visited the places where Mao Zedong, Zhu De and Zhou Enlai worked and lived during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the War of Liberation to experience the "Yan'an spirit" of CPC leaders guiding the Chinese people to gain victory under extremely harsh conditions. They also interviewed the CPC officials who are in charge of the Party members' oath ceremony.

Yan'an Middle School was founded directly by the government in Shan-Gan-Ning border region under the support of the CPC Central Committee and Chairman Mao in August 1938 as well as the first middle school opened by the CPC. Several grade-one students in Yan'an Middle School introduced to the correspondents the glorious history of their school. The correspondents asked questions on how to educate and carry forward the "Yan'an spirit" among young students, whether they want to join the CPC and what they want to do after growing up. Answering questions in a firm tone, the students indicated that the "Yan'an spirit" is always driving them to study hard and make progress.

Zhang Xilin, Mayor of Yan'an later received the correspondents, introduced to them the economic and social development and red tourism of Yan'an and answered their questions on "Yan'an spirit", Party education and the development of Yan'an.

In Xi'an, the correspondents visited Hanyang Tomb and the Museum of Terracotta Warriors and Horses and interviewed experts of the Museum. They marveled at the colorful ancient Chinese civilization and the government efforts of protecting cultural relics. They believe the advanced concepts and technologies of unearthing, cleaning and protecting cultural relics make unique contributions to world civilization and open a new window for the world to understand China.

In Defachang Dumpling Restaurant which has a long history in Xi'an, the provincial Foreign Affairs Office held a welcome ceremony for the correspondents. They tasted the dumpling cuisine with unique Chinese style. In a cordial atmosphere, the correspondents sang one after another melodious Chinese and foreign red songs in different languages, pushing the dinner to a climax.

The one-week "Red Tour" of foreign correspondents in China ended in full success. During the Tour, the correspondents participated in each of the activities with deep interest, widely reached out to ordinary officials and people and sought answers to the development, growth and success of the CPC. Azalea, Seeing off the Red Army, There will be no New China without the CPC and other classical red songs still echoed in their ears. They all said that the Red Tour enabled them to understand the historical background and connotation of the Jinggangshan spirit and Yan'an spirit. They sincerely wish a happy 90th birthday to the CPC and believe the Chinese people will make new achievements and greater glory under the leadership of the CPC.
