"The 9th International Conference on Traditional Pharmacology" will be held in the second half of the year in Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region,sponsored jointly by People's Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Institute of International Traditional Medicine.

In order to prepare for the conference, "Press Conference of The 9th International Conference on Traditional Pharmacology" will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 AM in February 17, 2006 in Guangxi Hall of the People's Conference Hall, Beijing.

Background of The 9th International Conference on Traditional Pharmacology

In 1990, the delegations from over 40 countries founded the Institute of International Traditional Medicine in Strasbourg, France and "The First International Conference on Traditional Pharmacology" was held. Thereafter, eight conferences, one time every two years, have been held in France, Sweden, China (Beijing), Switzerland, United Kingdom, the United States and South Africa etc.

In June 2004, China was confirmed to hold the 9th International Conference on Traditional Pharmacology in the City of Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region from August 22, 2006 to August 26, 2006 at the 8th Conference in United Kingdom. The conference will be sponsored jointly by the People's Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Institute of International Traditional Medicine, and organized by Institute of Medicinal Plant Development, China Academy of Medical Sciences and Health Bureau of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The theme of the conference is "Traditional Pharmacology and natural health products" that divided into four subjects as follows: "Protection and Sustainable Using of Traditional Medicine Resources and Management of Traditional Medicine", "Modern Research of Traditional Medicine", "Development of Traditional Medicine and Natural Health Products and Intellectual Property Protection" and "Research of Nation Folk Medicine and its Clinical application". Professor P.J.Houghton, Chairman of the Institute of International Traditional Medicine, Dr. Tony Cunningham from Australia, Professor J. van Staden from South Africa, Professor Nina Etkin from the United States and academicians from China Academy of Sciences and China Academy of Engineering will be invited as the keynote speakers .

At the Press Conference on February 17, 2006, chairman of The People's Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region will release the news and provide a brief introduction of the economic development, development & current situation of medicines in Guangxi and the strategy of future international cooperation.

Located at the crossing point of east, middle and west regions of China, Guangxi is one of the developing provinces in western part of China. It is situated at the overlap region of Southern, Southern-west China Economy Circle and ASEAN Economy Circle that provides the resources, geographical and industrial advantages. The GDP of Guangxi in 2005 reached up to 401.6 billion Chinese Yuan, 12.5% increased comparing with 2004. Guangxi is rich in traditional Chinese medicine resources. There are 4,623 kinds of traditional Chinese medicine; which situated in the national second place of the resources. The quality is renowned home and abroad. As one of the advantageous industries, traditional Chinese medicine industry has been included in the Eleventh-Five Plan in Guangxi domestic economy program.

This International Conference on Traditional Pharmacology is to exert all possibilities in enlarging the cooperation channel in medicine industries, science & technology over countries, promoting the communication and cooperation in the field of medicine industries between Guangxi, China and other countries.
